At least one of the reference letters must be academic; the second letter does not have to be so.
There is no difference of preference for applicants based on their undergraduate degree. Applicants from both social and natural sciences are equally welcome.
Applicants might apply for our program even if they submit an incomplete set of application documents during the application period. In that case, the applicant might be entitled to conditional admission. In other words, the applicant can be admitted to the program on the condition that he/she can submit his/her missing application documents by the pre-registration period. Otherwise, he/she loses the right to registration.
All applicants must provide an acceptable and valid proof of their English proficiency at the time of their application. To that end, our university Senate recognizes only three exams: TOEFL, IELTS and BUEPT (Boğaziçi University English Proficiency Exam).
Applicants might be exempt from certifying their English proficiency under the following conditions only: Applicants, who have completed an undergraduate or a graduate program in our university, are exempt from English proficiency requirement, as long as they apply to a graduate program in our university within at most two years of graduation from our university. Also, English proficiency level of citizens from countries where English is the official language will be determined via an interview at the School of Foreign Languages (YADYOK in short), and a written exam if necessary.
Conditions for transfer from non-thesis MIR program to thesis MIR program are as follows: At the end of fall and spring semesters; completion of six required and two elective courses with a CGPA of 3.50, meeting the GRE/ALES requirements sought for applications for thesis MIR program, and submission of a thesis proposal. After these conditions are met, the Executive Committee of MIR will decide on whether the student is eligible for a transfer to thesis MIR program.
Conditions for transfer from thesis MIR program to non-thesis MIR program are as follows: After completion of three required one elective course successfully, student can make a transfer request to the MIR office within announced dates for transfer applications. MIR academic coordinator proposes that the request be admitted by SBE (Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences). If SBE approves the proposal until two weeks before the beginning of online registration for following semester, the decision for transfer becomes effective.
After the add-drop period ends in a semester, the deadline for students to demand a tuition fee refund for that semester is over as well.
The requirements for graduation for the non-thesis MIR program consist of completing thirty-six credits of course work (that includes six required, four elective courses and a non-credit term project) with a 3,00 GPA. The program takes one year -three semesters (Fall, Spring and Summer)-to complete.
The requirements for graduation for the thesis MIR program consist of completing twenty-eight credits of course work (that includes six required, two elective courses) with a 3,00 GPA and completing an MA thesis. Courses should be completed in the first year and thesis should be completed in the second year (thesis term can be extended for the third year).
